“The Math Curse”

Dr. Mike Lindstrom has worked in the education field for over 35 years. He taught industrial technology/technology education at middle school, high school, and university levels and mathematics at the middle school level. He was employed by Anoka-Hennepin schools as a technology education consultant, instructional facilitator(K-12 mathematics co-director), assessment facilitator, and secondary mathematics specialist. He is presently teaching at Bethel University and at St. Mary’s University as an adjunct faculty member. He was a design team member and instructor for MN Math and Science Teacher Academies. He is a board member of the SciMathMN organization and is also a past executive director of this organization. Together, SciMathMN and the Minnesota Department of Education developed Frameworks for the delivery of Minnesota's mathematics and science standards. The Mathematics Frameworks provide the foundation for his talk as he shares his insights on “The Math Curse” while addressing the following questions:

  • The “math curse” is an affliction for many of us. How do we infect our students?
  • Why are standards important in this process?
  • Who does MN go to as the “expert” in standards?
  • What mathematics is it that students really should know and be able to do?
  • How do we know that we are on the right track?
  • How do we assist all MN teachers in understanding and delivering rigorous standards to all MN students?
  • What might the future hold for us as we develop curriculum to deliver rigorous standards?
