Connecting Standards and Routines

By: Laura Wagenman (MCTM President) and Jessica Strom (MCTM President Elect)

Routine: Number Talks

Students solve a problem mentally, then use a hand signal to show that they have a solution. The teacher elicits and records their solutions without indicating whether any are correct. Students are then invited to share and explain their strategies. The teacher records these strategies on the board, using expressions, equations, and labeled sketches to represent student thinking as accurately as possible.(click to read on)
