By now, you've probably heard that Minnesota has new Mathematics Standards. So, my question is: what's keeping you from taking a look?

Maybe your grade level isn't implementing them yet. Maybe you're a department of one. Maybe your plate is already overflowing with everything else that comes with teaching. Those are all legitimate reasons for hesitating.

Still, I'd like to encourage you to take that first step.

As I am getting ready for this school year, my highest priority is to reread the Career, College, Community Readiness Vision Statement. This will be my North Star this year in creating the conditions for student success through building positive classroom learning environments, learning partnerships and joy in mathematics.

Welcome back to another school year MN teachers!! As you work to integrate the 2022 Math Standards, know that MCTM is here to support you. This year, MathBits will come to your inbox bi-monthly. The first of the month will bring you updates specific to the math community. The 15th of the month will bring you standards implementation specific information. We look forward to engaging with our amazing math community during this historic year!

Call for Nominations for the MCTM Board of Directors

Do you want to get more involved with leadership in math education in MN? Do you know someone who would bring valuable experience to the MCTM Board of Directors? Nominations are open for four positions for the next MCTM Board election.

  • Vice-President Elementary

  • Region 2 Director, Region 5 Director & Region 8 Director (map of Regions)

The Board needs a diverse representation of MCTM membership to serve the Minnesota mathematics community. Help the Nominations and Elections Committee identify talented, energetic individuals to work on the mission of MCTM. The Board election is held in February with newly elected Board members beginning a three-year term at the Spring conference April 23, 2027.

MCTM Elementary Endowment Update

We recently experienced our very first Endowment-sponsored math workshop for elementary teachers. Thirty teachers participated in this workshop which was held in person at Hamline University and remotely in Cloquet and Houston. Terry Wyberg facilitated two fabulous days of learning about early math trajectories. We engaged in a variety of learning activities and left feeling very inspired!

2022 MN Anchor Standard 5&6 Fluency Webinar Series

The MN Math Leaders ‘Fact Fluency Webinar Series’ launched 2-days ago!  If you missed it there is still time to join.  We recorded the first (of 8) sessions and put the recording on a private site for those who register for the series.  Here is a short 30 second clip of the 90-minute webinar – To give you a taste of what you missed.  MCTM Link to Register: MCTM’s 8-part Math Fluency Webinar Series (think of this as a math version of ‘LETRS’ training).  $150 for all 8 sessions.

MN Math Leaders

Join MCTM MN Math Leaders either Thursday, October 8th (7am) or Tuesday, October 20th (12:30 pm) or Thursday, October 22 (4:00 pm) for the October MN Math Leader Meeting.  Our theme is ‘Experience the 2022 MN Math Standards’ – In October we will talk about Anchor Standard 1 (a newish routine) and Have 2 educators share their ‘Show & Tell’, we will have a new 10-minute PL idea (with resources) for you to use immediately and tons of announcements.  Please invite others to JOIN MCTM MN Math Leaders – it is FREE.
